Why an X-Brace?

Modern vehicles are equipped with subframes that secure the control arms to a solid, often aluminum-cast component. However, the Volkswagen MK1 only has mounting points on the chassis beams, leaving plenty of room for flex and, in the worst-case scenario, chassis cracking.

What Is Chassis Flex, and Why Is It a Problem?

Chassis flex is a significant drawback as it leads to unwanted wheel alignment changes and increases the risk of body cracking. This is especially critical if you drive your MK1 aggressively, but even Sunday cruisers benefit from maintaining their car’s structural integrity for years to come.

What Makes This Brace So Special?

While other X-braces are available, they all share one major flaw: they hang too low, reducing ground clearance. This can be particularly problematic since lowering the car is often one of the first modifications MK1 owners make.

Our goal was to develop an X-brace that doesn't compromise ground clearance. After extensive testing and prototyping, we found the perfect balance. Using the stabilizer bar bracket and the bottom of the oil pan (20VT) as reference points, this brace never becomes the lowest point on your car.

Challenges

Designing the perfect-fitting X-brace came with its own challenges. Since this brace sits higher than any other, it’s positioned closer to the exhaust line. To ensure sufficient clearance, the tubing is indented at certain points. We’ve tested the brace on various engines, including 20VT, ABF, and 1.1, and found no fitment issues.

However, since many exhaust systems are custom-made, we can’t guarantee a perfect fit for all setups. To help you verify compatibility, we provide a detailed diagram so you can check if the brace will interfere with your exhaust.

Built to Last

The brace is constructed from premium-grade RVS304 stainless steel and fully TIG-welded (weldporn) in the Netherlands. This ensures exceptional durability and resistance to rust, even if the brace scrapes against speed bumps or other obstacles.

Important Note

If your MK1 is equipped with a stabilizer bar, a minor modification is required to the mounting bracket. The recessed area will need to be flattened or adjusted with a hammer.
